This video is a translation of a fantastic piece by Giornata Tipo, an Italian media outlet, about the story of Juan Manuel Fernandez, which we wanted to make available in French. But we encourage you to watch the original video, which can be found here:    • IL RIENTRO DOPO LA BATTAGLIA CONTRO LA DEP...

Juan Manuel Fernandez, on January 26, 2022, decided to terminate his contract with the Trieste team, officially for personal reasons. This is extremely rare. So why?

Deep depression. Hours spent brooding in his room, unable to leave, trying to calm his mind. Days off, away from basketball, seemed like oases in the middle of a long, dark period. Suffering, and trying to hide it from everyone. Feeling like a hypocrite, pushing his children to do what made them happy, while doing something every day that made him miserable.

Until the critical moment, the thought of hoping to get injured so he wouldn't have to go to practice anymore. And a conversation with his wife, who urged him to stop and seek professional help.

He would later say that he didn't need answers, just support. To talk about what he was feeling, to understand it in order to better manage it. Basketball was merely the catalyst; he needed space.

He made a list of things he could do outside of basketball, took advantage of his free weekends and vacations, and began working. Then, through his interactions with young people, he rediscovered his passion for basketball, which spurred him to start training again. This led to his return to the professional ranks, two years and nine months after his last game.

Today, he is supported by a professional coach, but he also mentors 12 other athletes who are going through the same challenges he faced.

So why am I telling you all this? To highlight the media outlet that interviewed him, his story, and to encourage open discussion about these experiences. For greater tolerance, to accept that even though they are players on the field, living their passion, it doesn't mean they can't suffer, that their lives aren't difficult. And therefore, to help some take a step back from sports.

And finally, because it can happen to anyone. I, Hugo, have been affected by this too. It took support, a real rebuilding process, to accept what was happening, to talk about it, and to move forward. Talk about it, get help if it happens to you. And long live life!
