Oh, you play basketball? Aren't you a little short?
It's a question thousands of us have heard. And in this video, we'll explore with TJ Shorts the keys to scoring when you're short!

No one doubts that being tall is an advantage in basketball. And yet. The undisputed leader of the Euroleague's number 1 team is 1.75 meters tall. MVP of the Champions League, the Eurocup, and the French championship, he defies all logic, especially since he's unreliable from beyond the arc. It seems unthinkable, and yet...
So why? When you're short, how do you make your mark? The first thing is that you can't attack the basket like other players, or you risk getting blocked. You have to be smarter than that. How do you do it?
If the big men come out, you have to get past them and attack with your strong hand. But you have to develop specific finishing moves. When you watch TJ Shorts play, he attacks towards the base of the key, not directly towards the basket where the big men are waiting for him. These are more difficult layups, but he's learned to master them over time.
If the big men are waiting for him under the basket, then you have to be patient. Running towards them is suicide. So you have to stall, even if it means keeping your defender behind you, to buy time, give your big man time to roll towards the basket, and thus create a 2-on-1 situation. If there's space, you can use your big man to set a screen on his defender, like a Gortat Screen. Otherwise, you have to stop to shoot over the basket.
There are two crucial moments for smaller players to take advantage of their speed and find easy scoring opportunities: transitions, by running quickly up front while the taller players haven't yet retreated, and attacks on the opposite side of the screen. Since no one is under the basket, you have to use and abuse these opportunities. And always find the right balance: going quickly under the basket if no one is waiting for you, or holding back if necessary.
And if the taller players are high up, then you can attack wide to then be able to pass the ball at the right time. And making three-pointers is useful, of course, but it's not crucial. The most important thing is to choose them well, especially if it's not your specialty. Only take good shots. We can see, for example, that he, who doesn't have much strength, draws up from low to be able to push better and compensate for his lack of power.
So to summarize, you have to attack wide, hard towards the circle if possible and if there is space, but never directly at the circle at the risk of being countered, if we are expected to be patient, even if it means shooting over, and take advantage of the transition and attacks on the opposite side of the screen, with plenty of open space. There aren't that many tools to master: layups from away from the basket, finishes from 2-3 meters above the basket, floaters or short shots after the dribble, and that already seems enough to potentially become Euroleague MVP.
