Kansas Duck Hunt | Caught in a Duck Vortex
Late season Kansas duck hunting can change in a heartbeat — and in this hunt, we found ourselves stuck in what locals call a duck vortex. Mallards were circling nonstop, working the pond over and over without committing. If you’ve hunted late-season birds, you know this kind of action can be just as exciting — and frustrating — as birds finishing in the decoys.
This is Part 2 of our late-season Kansas duck hunt in north-central Kansas. After a slow start that turned our morning hunt into an afternoon sit, the birds finally showed up. Mallards began flying, circling, and stacking up in the area, creating an unforgettable late-season waterfowl hunt. Even when we weren’t in the action, ducks were moving everywhere — a true Kansas duck vortex.
