Did it work? Well for some it did, one being Flight Sergeant John Alwyn Phillips, pilot of Handley Page Halifax HR871 which took off on the 2nd August 1943 to drop target indicators over Hamburg. The weather forecast that night was bad with thunderous clouds from 1000ft to 30000ft, HR871 suffered a lightning strike and the crew decided to bail out to safety over Sweden.
