Ontologies, BIBFRAME, and Beyond
Autumn Faulkner, Michigan State University

From the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Music OCLC Users Group, March 6 & 7, 2025

This session will be a basic overview of BIBFRAME, including its characteristics as a web ontology, its model and vocabulary, the changes it will bring to catalog record structure, its place among current cataloging standards, and relevant Library of Congress and library vendor developments. If time permits, a demo of current BIBFRAME/linked data cataloging editors using a music resource will also be presented. Attendees can expect to come away with a solid grasp of what day-to-day BIBFRAME cataloging could involve; namely, the practical differences between BIBFRAME cataloging and MARC cataloging, and the growing number of systems and tools available to potential BIBFRAME adopters. For the best possible learning experience, attendees should have some familiarity with conventional MARC cataloging, RDA (original or new versions), and FRBR/LRM.
