The Little Mermaid is trending so, let’s talk about TRUE origins of Sirens. People are arguing whether the Little Mermaid should have been played by a black actress. Ariel was written by Hans Cristian Andersen, the Danish writer. But on the other hand, she was a fictional character, so does it matter? If you ask me, that is not actually the real controversy. What nobody is saying is that, she should not have even had a fishtail. She should have been a BIRD! So everybody is way off with their criticism. I am kidding over here, but I wanted to use this interest into mermaids to talk about Sirens in Greek Mythology. The real inspiration behind these mythical creatures.
In ancient Greek mythology, Sirens were birds with a face and a voice of a woman. All knowing demonic beings who stopped winds, calmed seas and mesmerised sailors with their song. And then killed them.
They were not daughters of Triton, but of god Phorcus or the river god Achelous. At first they were beautiful girls and best friends of Persephone, the daughter of Demeter. But when Hades abducted Persephone, everything changed. They asked the gods for wings so that they could look for their best friend all over the world.
There a lot of stories about them - from the most famous one - the Odyssey where Sirens tried to seduce Odysseus and his men, to the story about the singing competition with the Muses.
Christians used Siren to describe prostitutes, beautiful courtesans, vice of pleasure and worldly temptations. Only in the Middle Ages Siren became a synonym for a Mermaid, and got fishtails. Then, slowly, over time, they lost the wings and that story about the birds slowly disappeared from the folklore.
