Netflix has done it again. They have made a spectacle just for the sake of drama. Recently they have premiered docuseries Queen Cleopatra, that has caused huge commotion in different communities - archeologists, historians, egyptologists, Egyptians and people with different political and social agendas all had something to say. And it wasn't good.
It all started when Netflix published a trailer for Queen Cleopatra, and the main topic of the discussion in the media was the choice of the lead actress. From the trailer one would think that the issue of Cleopatra's lineage would be the main focus of this series, but it was't. The trailer was just a calculated move by Netflix to start the drama.
Previously, they have done even worse thing, at least in my opinion. The "docuseries" Ancient Apocalypse was pure fabrication. This "docuseries" was presented by a journalist Graham Hancock, who is spinning the narrative, trying to convince the viewers that there was some "advanced Ice Age civilisation" that was lost due to an apocalypse, but that the survivors introduced agriculture, different lifestyle and monumental architecture to hunter-gatherers around the world, and that it all happened almost over night. And this is wrong. These innovations took a long time, and as archaeologists we can see how they developed. Also, he is falsely dating different buildings and monuments, to fit his story. It is pure sensationalism and a lie. He manipulated the experts' interviews and took what worked in his advantage. The archaeologist were fighting back especially the Society for American Archaeology, that wrote an open letter to Netflix, asking them to reclassify the series as science-fiction, as the label docuseris would fool people into thinking that it is scientifically relevant. You can find the letter on this link

These two series are both a part of the same problem - Netflix's sensationalism. Doing everything for the views. I applaud Netflix for wanting to invest into documentaries, into the educational content and I think that they should, but not for the sake of the truth. There are a lot of interesting stories, hey both of these topics are extremely interesting and important - Cleopatra and Neolithic revolution, but just do it correctly. Hire the right people, experts who can make both and ENTERTAINING and FACTUAL.
So by now, you've figured it out that we are reacting to two docuseries, or one that is at least labelled as such, and I am commenting as a person with a PhD in archaeology, without other agendas, just the education. Our goal is to show the viewers that education can be fun. That there are so many untold stories from the past that are interesting and entertaining. Join us in this journey.
