And there we have the last two characters, including the 'canon' ending. Liu Kang wins the first tournament... and then they all get tricked into a second "final" tournament right away and, well, the rest is history. Rewritten history now.
Liu Kang's an interesting one in this. I sorely miss his low fireball, to catch ducking players. And his kick goes at a unique upward angle, meaning you can overshoot the opponents. However, that kick came in handy against Shang Tsung. Since he can't crouch... well, unless he transforms first. Which he does. His fatality is pretty boring though.
Scorpion was more of a challenge. One of the classic characters, a fan favorite, but in this one of his moves is just awful. The teleport really is useless. Especially if you're in a corner, where it just won't work. And the spear is very punishable. But the spear is fun. Just like the ice ball is fun. As fun as this game has anyway. Goro proved to be a challenge, needing a whole new cheese to work. But I figured one out.
I also took a look at the DOS port, available (along with 2 and 3's) on GoG. And... I am honestly very impressed with it. It runs smoothly, it looks alright (fewer colors and lower resolution sprites are obvious though), sounds good (again, different from the arcade though). The default controls are absolutely awful, but if you adjust them to your liking, the game works really well. The way the special moves work in Mortal Kombat make keyboard controls actually viable! Well done, well done.
However, as a whole, I am done with the first Mortal Kombat. I don't like it. The characters aren't very good in it. None of them have the versatility afforded to them in later installments, where they become actual fighters. And, of course, the bosses are pretty cheap here. But this game was still miles beyond most of its competition, which is why it found success. And I'm glad it did, because the more recent games are amazing, from such humble beginnings. -- Watch live at / the_nametag
