Part Three Side B - Male Infertility
Part Three continued.
In the second half of Part Three, Jason continues his story about his fight with prolactinoma - a pituitary tumor that caused his body to produce estrogen instead of testosterone. The tumor also rendered him infertile.
In 2008, when the Great Recession struck his painting business hard, Jason learned about the pituitary tumor and his infertility when he and his wife were attempting unsuccessfully to have a second child.
Eventually, doctors removed the tumor following a second, painful procedure using gamma knife radiation. The surgery was a success as he was able to have children again. Jason kept his faith even after the premature death of their second child. And he and his wife, Aimee Nolan, have been blessed with a third child - Ian, who will be 5 in 2019.
Jason tells his story so that men who are experiencing difficulty in conceiving children have themselves checked out. He points out that oftentimes men find out about their pituitary tumors only after they go blind. Doctors told Jason that had he not sought medical attention, it’s quite likely he would have suffered the same fate.
More men may soon find themselves dealing with infertility as a study completed by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2017 found that sperm counts among men in the West have more than halved in the past 40 years. The study also found that sperm counts among test subjects continued to drop by an average of 1.4 percent per year.
