In Part Five Side B of God’s Gift of Happiness, Jason Nolan continues explaining his process of advanced home brewing, which involves the use of grains instead of dry or liquid malt extracts. Jason shows how a hydrometer measures the sugar content of the wort so he can determine an estimated alcohol content. He then explains when he adds the hops and how he circulates the boiling wort to avoid scorching the mash or contaminating the brew before fermentation. He also explains how he cools down the wort quickly by running it through a plate chiller cooled with water from a garden hose.
Using grains to brew beer requires brewers like Jason to obtain more advanced knowledge and expertise and the right equipment. Towards the end of the video, Jason also shows his finished product, an IPA with 120 lovibond scale malted grain, Cascade hops and SafAle-US-05 yeast.
Finally, Jason reflects on how his faith in God and his 10-plus years of beer brewing helped him push through the hard times over the past several years. And while home brewing offers him a fun, enjoyable hobby to help him detox, Jason says he doesn’t use the gift of brewing to forget the things that really matter - home and family.
