So last year I went on an Arizona coues whitetail hunt. I took my trusty carbon fiber barreled Winchester model 70 carbon classic chambered in 7mm Rem Mag. At the time I was shooting the solid copper or monolithic Barnes VOR-TX LR in 139 grain. I had zeroed it in at 200 yards and it was shooting fast and accurate. This rifle has a 26" Christensen Arm carbon fiber barrel with a shillen liner, and can out shoot my shooting capability by far. So anyways, the hunt came around and after 4 days, we finally spotted what I classified as a "shooter" buck. So we ranged him and got set up. As I watched him through my nightforce shv scope, I lay my reticle where I wanted my point of impact to hit and gently squeezed the trigger. As two other hunters looked on, there was silence. The concussion knocked me slightly off target so as I re-engaged I could still see the deer standing there, only a few feet lower. As I looked closer I could make out a small red spot or entry wound only inches higher than where I was aiming. The deer didn't seem to be mortally wounded. I would have to put one more down the tube to quickly get the deer to expire. As I walked over and started processing and quartering the deer through the gutless cleaning method, I could help but notice that my first shot was a complete pass through. It was then that I found the rumors to be true about the lack of expansion from a solid copper projectile. Fast forward a year and I am getting gear ready to go on the very same hunt, only this time I am switching back to a more traditional lead core projectile. I am shooting the 139 Hornady American Whitetail to be exact, mostly was attracted to those because of the cool American flag packaging. Anyways, I had all of my data from the previous year and I wanted to compare to I set off to the desert to do a little shooting and sight in my rifle. I had to make a small adjustment to the elevation but was able to get it to group just under one inch at 200 yards, or Sub MOA. I also measured the velocity using mu chronograph and was within 50 to 100 feet per second. So in conclusion, things seem to be tipping in favor of lead core ammo. At least on paper. The true test will come next week if I get an opportunity on another coues whitetail deer. I hope to be able to quickly and efficiently drop my target this time. Fingers crossed!
