So, today, after covering many Greek football chants and anthems in my "Acoustic football chants" Series (playlist here :https://bit.ly/38bZ9oz) I'm doing my first international song. So I decided to start by covering the most famous football song of all time, a song that makes the hair at the back of my neck stand every time I hear it since I remember myself.

Growing up in a small provincial town in Greece, my parents never pushed me into supporting any Greek club. BUT, there was no discussion to be made when it came to international football : We Supported Liverpool, and that was something not to be negotiated. Due to the fact that I was born in 1987, I was fortunate enough to only hear about the legend of Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush, but during the 90s Liverpool had produced some new stars like Steve McManamann, Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler to name a few.

I was constantly hearing stories about the club's European and domestic dominance, but frankly, Liverpool was kind of struggling in those years, finishing mid table, with a win over heated rivals Man U. being the highlight of a season sometimes (a stunning Man U team, playing probably the best football on the planet at the time, which made the importance of a good result against them even sweeter). The years passed, with Steven Gerrard gradually becoming the legend that he has come to be remembered for, with European Glory coming to the club, but the Premiere League remained a distant goal. A moment that I'll always remember is the F.A. cup final winning goal by Gerrard, and of course the 2005 final in Istanbul.

Growing up I was becoming more and more disillusioned with football, as it was progressing into the era of "Rich Investor" styled clubs, with gazillions of dollars poured into them, creating championship winning teeams in a fortnight's time. It seemed pretty silly to me to support a club, since football was all about money after all. Grounds were changed or moved, even names and emblems were changed, and there was no national element like for example "Catenaccio" or "Total Football", since you could see English clubs with not a single British player in the squad. And this comes from a person who despises nationalism and any kind of such discrimation. I'm just missing the character, the class of "footballing schools" when you had champions league finals like "Ajax vs Juventus", with teams comprised almost 100% from local stars, witha real clash between the Dutch and Italian school.

Neverheless, even during years that I didn't even know who was winning the Greek championship (well, it was actually one team and one team only for 20 years - with some rare exceptions), I was always checking on Liverpool. I asked myself "Why?". I never supported Liverpool because of the titles (hell, I never saw that many titles in my lifetime), and I can't say that the team's football quality was "a sight for sore eyes" all of the seasons.

The reason that I supported Liverpool was, and is, because of the characters. Because of the club's awareness on social issues. Because they won a Champion's League against one of the best A.C. Milan squads of all time with players like Sami Hyypiä in the squad, fighting the likes of Maldini and Shevchenko.

Because of this song.

To be honest I didn't really care about this year's Premiere League win. I felt it was way too easy. And I really didn't care about last years win against Tottenham. I enjoyed the semis against Barca much more.

What I do care about, is having a passionate personality like Jurgen Klopp as a coach, players like Mo Sallah and Sadio Mane giving back to their countries, bulding schools, hospitals and supporting the local communities. Players who openly showed their opposition to racial discrimination by taking a vocal position during the recent "Black Lives Matter" situation. Players like Robbie Fowler who supported the local dockers' union and got fined by UEFA.

Class and character.
Two things that all the money in the world can't buy.

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
