Bees are in decline around the world as a result of human activities, namely the use of pesticides and changes in land use. Along with other pollinators, bees play a vital role in pollinating food crops (between 66-75% depending upon sources) as well as supporting biodiversity. Each of us can contribute to supporting our local bee population by :
not cutting the lawn too early in the year (or too often). This allows wild flowers to establish themselves and sow seeds
leaving patches in the garden that are wild.
planning for annual and perennial flowers, not just vegetables
planting shrubs that bees love: Cotoneasters, Common Privet, etc
building insect hotels
