Is Afghanistan REALLY "the graveyard of empires?" Why have so many richer, more sophisticated, and better-equipped armies like those of Alexander the Great, the British Empire, the Soviet Union and now the United States failed to conquer one of the poorest, least educated areas of the earth? The Chicago Council for Science and Technology's Comic Science Communicator in Residence Aaron Freeman talks with Iran-born sociology professor Doctor Ahmad Sadri of Lake Forest College wax funny about the history of Afghanistan's would-be rulers and optimistically about what US policy could/should be in that country and beyond. In a wide-ranging interview, we talk about the role of Saudia Arabia in the creation of the Taliban President Ronald Reagan's affection for the Afghan rebels in the 1980's as they fought the Soviet Union. Reagan even went so far as to invite future Taliban leaders into the White House Oval Office and dedicate a launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia to the Afghan resistance.
