Early February here in the countryside on one of Japan's remote Southern islands and we're celebrating "Setsubun"
Setsubun literally means "seasonal division" and is a festival held on the day before Spring,called Risshun in Japanese.
Ehomaki Sushi rolls are commonly eaten on Setsubun.
For Setsubun,you have to eat your sushi roll facing a certain direction which changes each year for good luck.
The bean throwing ritual of "Mamemaki" is also done on Setsubun day.
The Oni monster representing various negativities.
Throwing the beans at it is a way of driving away all that bad stuff bringing good luck and more positive vibes.
We also enjoyed watching another successfull rocket launch as Japan's main launch site is located right here on this remote island!
