Italian is a Romance language from the Indo-European family that evolved from Vulgar Latin. It's the least divergent Romance language from Latin, along with Sardinian. Italian is an official language in Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, and parts of Switzerland. It has official minority status in Croatia and parts of Slovenia. The standard Italian language originated from 12th-century Tuscan literature, and its modern form was shaped by more recent developments, though its core grammar and lexicon remain similar to those used in 13th-century Florence.
Salentino is a dialect of the Extreme Southern Italian spoken in the Salento peninsula, which is the southern part of the region of Apulia at the southern "heel" of the Italian peninsula. It is thus closer to the Southern Calabrian dialect and the dialects of Sicily than to the geographically less distant dialects of central and northern Apulia.
