In this Short video, Nilam demonstrates the way she learned to make string as a little girl in Nepal. She is using common grass to make a strong rope during First Circle Camp.
She told us Rice Grass was used to make a very strong rope for swings and jump ropes.
Her technique is similar to the way the Inca twist their grass called q’oya, to make bridges that span deep river canyons.
Each year, the people twist long ropes of grass to rebuild the Q'eswachaka Bridge in Peru.
A simple survival skill such as making string from grasses and other plants has powerful useful applications!
