Bow drill tip. If your handhold aka bearing cap of your bow drill begins to smoke it’s time to lubricate the top of your spindle to stop it from smoking.
You want all the friction happening at the fireboard end not at the handhold. You will increase your chances of success with the bow drill.
You can use a rock instead of a wooden handhold to reduce friction Or hardwood in place of a handhold made from softwood.
You may still have to lubricate the rock or hardwood handhold but not as often as you would with a handhold made from softwood.
There’s my bow drill tip of the day hope that helps!
