Here I share a couple of experiences recorded from recent local rides regarding surprises and the difference between safety and compliance.
I often say safety and compliance are different things, this is because we know just following the rules is not enough to avoid accidents.
Sometimes surprise events will unfold despite us being compliant.
Yes, I could fault the drivers in the clip for breaking the law, they failed to stop at give way junctions. But as the clip demonstrates, it is not just one.
I used to get angry, still do - you will hear my horn. But these days I do not wish to make their problems my problems and prefer to avoid the confrontations. Or at least avoid accidents.
The thinking I share regarding surprises comes from the "No Surprise / No Accident" philosophy https://nosurprise.org.uk
