How to remove rust from a knife with a potato - enhance your wilderness survival skills by learning an easy bushcraft tip that helps you clean your equipment more quickly.

You are on a camping trip and discover, that your knife is covered with rust. You want to remove the rust, but you do not have any special equipment for that with you. But you took some potatoes for dinner. That will do!

The potato is a root vegetable that consists of water (79%), carbohydrates (17% of which 88% is starch), protein (2%). The vegetable is known to be a rich source of vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Potatoes also contain oxalic acid, which helps to break down the rust.

That is the main reason you can remove rust from a knife blade with a potato and there are actually several methods for that. You can cut a potato in half and dip the end in dish soap, rub the rusted area with the potato and then set it on the metal for a few hours and scrub away. Or insert the blade of your knife into a raw potato, let it set overnight and clean it with a soft cloth or toothbrush. Or when you are in a hurry, you can also scrub the blade with a slice of a potato, wash it with soap and that’s it.
