The largest known representative of the ankylosaurids, this lizard is often the hero of historical movies and books, and has the status of the archetype of the armored dinosaurs. The first ankylosaur fossils were discovered in 1906 in the American state of Montana. The find belongs to Barnum Brown, who led an expedition to the Hell Creek Formation. So far, scientists have not been able to collect a complete skeleton of the ankylosaur. Based on the available fragments, they named it the largest representative of ankylosaurids. Ankylosaurus lived in the Mesozoic era. It in turn is divided into three periods: Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. In which of them lived dinosaur - the question is controversial. Many articles say that he existed at the end of the last period, 66-74 million years ago.
What did the Ankylosaurus eat?
The lizard was an herbivorous animal. Researchers found that he needed up to 60 kg of greens per day. Ankylosaurus lived in sparse forests and fed on the lower tier of vegetation. His diet included ferns, leaves and soft fruits. There is a suggestion that he could eat carrion and eggs of other dinosaurs. The lizard could not chew, so it swallowed pieces of food whole. The stomach was adapted to digest whole food.
Lifestyle
Herbivorous dinosaurs most often lived in herds. So it was easier for them to defend themselves from enemies and protect their offspring. Dwelt in places with dense vegetation. They were peaceful and non-conflictual. Until now, paleontologists have not been able to find in one place a cluster of remains of a group of individuals. From this follows the assumption that ankylosaurs could lead a solitary way of life. Scientists assumed that the animal was slow because of its size. However, the research conducted suggests otherwise. The long stride length of ankylosaurus provided him with a high speed of movement. The lizard's natural enemies were large carnivorous dinosaurs. However, good armor and mace on the end of the tail made ankylosaurus a worthy opponent. Only its belly was unprotected. But even here, the animal found a way out. During a confrontation, the lizard clamped its legs and could burrow into the sand. So it couldn't be knocked over and hit where it was vulnerable. And to avoid conflict, the lizard could camouflage itself in the forest thanks to its inconspicuous coloration.
Ankylosaurus longevity
Life expectancy of Ankylosaurus scientists have not yet been able to find out. However, its anatomy and strong protective shell suggest that he lived long enough compared to the weaker and more vulnerable representatives of his species.
Ankylosaurus reproduction
The lizards most likely reproduced by oviposition. After birth, the offspring lived in a herd for a certain period of time. Adult lizards protected them from predators and helped them adapt to life. At the end of the Cretaceous, ankylosaurs did not have many cubs because of climate change.
