Parasaurolophus was first described in 1923 by William Park from remains found in the province of Alberta in Canada. Like most platypus dinosaurs, an adult Parasaurolophus weighed 4,400 kilograms or even 5 tons. Duck-billed dinosaurs with hollow crests had narrower muzzles than Hadrosaurs with flat heads or solid crests. This probably helped them pluck appetizing plants or branches more neatly. Parasaurolophus is the most remarkable representative of duck-billed dinosaurs with hollow crests. The nasal bones of its skull turned into giant extended hollow tubes, which, bending, stretched behind the head. What was the purpose of such formations? Paleontologists still do not know exactly, but believe that they were a kind of voice amplifiers, similar to the nasal folds on the heads of Hadrosaurus without crests. With such an "instrument" the animal could make sounds like a trombone to lure females or challenge rivals to a duel. According to another view, such pipes created air circulation in the skull and cooled the brain in the heat. The luxurious crest of parasaurolophus could have another function: to work as a kind of reflector whipped on the muzzle of twigs, when the lizard made its way through the forest thicket - note that the crest lies exactly in the notch of the spine, while the shape of the body becomes streamlined. It is quite possible that all these hypotheses are correct and the crest was a multifunctional structure. And if it had a signaling function, it is likely that the same duties were performed by the tail of the animal. The tail was broad, flattened at the sides, and very much resembled a plank. It appears that large areas of the hide on the sides of the tail were brightly colored. Parasaurolophs also probably used it to challenge their opponents to a duel, or to give signs.
