When it comes to terminology, teaching the terminology of mathematics does not need to be a standalone portion of the lesson. Some terms (i.e., equivalent, sum, integer, etc.) may need to be defined in order for students to understand the problem they are to solve. Other vocabulary, however, should be taught within the context of the lesson so that students develop the mathematical understanding linked to that vocabulary word, rather than simply learning a definition.
