The Lal Mahal (“Red Palace”) was built around 1630 AD by Shahaji Bhosale (father of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj) for his wife Jijabai and son Shivaji, when the family shifted to Pune.

The palace is in the locality of Kasba Peth, in the heart of Pune city.

One of the most legendary episodes: In 1663, when the Mughals under Shaista Khan captured Pune and took over the palace, Shivaji attacked under cover of night and in the struggle shaista Khan lost fingers escaping through a window of the Lal Mahal.

The current building is a reconstruction rather than the original Lal Mahal. The original no longer exists in its full form.

The reconstruction was done by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) during the 1980s (construction started around 1984 and completed by 1988).

Inside you’ll find: large oil-paintings depicting events from Shivaji’s life, a statue of Jijabai, a model of Raigad Fort with horsemen, a large map of Maharashtra showing forts associated with Shivaji.
