Shaniwar Wada is located in Shaniwar Peth, Pune, Maharashtra 411030, Near the Peshwa Ganpati Mandir on Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Road.
It is built in 1732 by Peshwa Bajirao Pratham of Maratha Empire. The foundation stone was laid on 10th January 1730 on Saturday (Shaniwar) and hence, it is named as Shaniwar Wada.
It is 7 Storey building built by Stone and Woods completed in 2 years in 1732.
It was built with great security but in 1818 British East India captured the fort. It witnessed major events in Maratha history, including political decisions, royal ceremonies, and military planning.
Eaxctly after 10 years 1828 a misterious fire caught engulfed the fort. Some says it was done by British East India company to wipe out Marathas History, while some says it was a curse for Anandi Bai who found peace after Narayan Rao's murder.
The Tragic Tale of Narayanrao (August 30, 1773)
One of the most haunting incidents in Shaniwar Wada’s history is the murder of Peshwa Narayanrao, who was just 18 years old.
Legend says he was killed by palace guards on the orders of his uncle, Raghunathrao, and aunt, Anandibai, during a palace conspiracy.
It is said that even today, people believe they can hear his ghostly cry: "Kaka, mala vachva!" (“Uncle, save me!”).
The palace complex covered about 625 acres originally, though only a fraction remains today.
It had five main gates:
Dilli Darwaza (Delhi Gate) – Main and grandest gate
Mastani Darwaza – It was a private entrance and exit for Mastani
Khidki Darwaza – Smaller gate with a window
Ganesh Darwaza – Private entrance used for religious purposes
Jambhul Darwaza (Narayan Darwaza) – Known as the gate where Narayanrao was killed
Inside were gardens, fountains (like the Hazari Karanje, a fountain with 1,000 jets), audience halls, and private quarters.
Shaniwar Wada is one of Pune’s most visited tourist attractions.
It stands as a powerful reminder of the Maratha Empire’s legacy.
It remains a key cultural and heritage landmark in Maharashtra.
