It's always tough to follow on from a release with as much impact as Simply Deep’s second full compilation, but they have smashed the ball out of the park again with SD005. Chameleon Audio head honcho; MoJoe steps forward with his ‘YhYh’ EP, which is jam-packed with weighty goodness from start to finish. Comprised of three original dub influenced grime instrumentals, the whole EP is a serious step up from the Walsall native, who has refined his choppier bass style with instantly noticeable results. The title track which features a strong vocal appearance from Kimbo is one for the dance for sure, focusing on unpredictable rapid fire drums and swirling synths.
Next is ‘12.7’, a powerhouse roller driven by strong low oscillators, eerie atmospheric synths and a selectively sparse drum arrangement, more reminiscent of early Kahn & Neek works. The final original is possibly the best of the three in ‘Ombar’. This little stick of dynamite is a grime MC’s dream with its eastern influenced melodies and gritty bass patterns leaving a perfect amount of room left to naturally swing between it's excitable elements.
On remix duty, Mojoe’s Chameleon and Triple S partner; Chemist RNS steps up to great effect with his gritty signature style rework of ‘YhYh’, whilst aaee brings forward an incredibly versatile remix of ‘12.7’. Remixes can often outweigh originals on EP’s like this however SD005 sits in perfect balance between original and recreation. As ever Simply Deep have outdone themselves with another solid release, exploring the depths of bass music to it’s fullest potential and widest parameters
