In this video we filmed a large spread out pod of Risso's dolphins off the coast of Caithness, Scotland. Risso's dolphins can be seen along the whole Caithness coastline, sometimes coming really close to shore which makes for great viewing!
Risso's dolphins are a relatively large dolphin, often mistaken for orca with their size and large dorsal fins! They have a large bulbous head and adult dolphins can be pure white in colour. Risso's dolphins are heavily scarred from social interactions (common in toothed whales/dolphins) and the pronounced appearance of these scars results from the lack of repigmentation hence the near pure white colour in older animals.
