Carnitine shuttle: Fatty acid oxidation: Part 4. I'm Dr. Vijaya Marakala, in this video, I have explained a shuttle transport mechanism involved in fatty acid oxidation that is beta-oxidation. Long-chain fatty acids are not permeable to the inner mitochondrial membrane, therefore, activated fatty acid in the inter membranous space of mitochondria combines with carnitine inturn it converted to acylcarnitine. Now this acylcarnitine can be transported across the inner mitochondrial membrane to the mitochondrial matrix with the help of carnitine- acylcarnitine transport protein. In the mitochondrial matrix, acylcarnitine converted back to acyl-CoA and further undergoes series of reactions pathway called beta-oxidation.
