Is the Vivitar Close-Up Macro Kit a hidden gem or a lens-ruiner? In this technical breakdown, I test the optical performance of the Vivitar Close-Up Macro Lens Set to see if it holds up on modern professional cinema cameras. We test these filters for sharpness, chromatic and geometric aberrations using two distinct setups: the Samyang 50mm on an S35 sensor Blackmagic Production and the DZO Catta Ace Zoom (at 50mm) on the Full-Frame Blackmagic Pyxis.
As a cinematographer, I’m looking to see if these budget filters provide a usable "macro" solution or if the image degradation is too high for professional work. We finish with a "Real-World" shot to see how the glass performs in a creative scenario.
