Exploring Christian Meditation
Christian meditation is an ancient way to find God and God’s peace.
The method involves the repetition of a single word or phrase faithfully and lovingly during the time of meditation. This is a very ancient Christian way of prayer that was recovered for modern Christians by the Benedictine monk John Main (1926 -1982). John Main recovered this way of bringing the mind to rest in the heart through his study of the teachings of the first Christian monks, the Desert Fathers, and of John Cassian (4th century AD). It is in the same tradition as The Cloud of Unknowing, written in England in the 14th century.
John Main's legacy inspired the formation of the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM), and his work is being carried on by Father Laurence Freeman, also a Benedictine monk.
A Way into Christian Meditation
Find an undisturbed place to sit down. Sit still with your back straight, and with both feet on the floor. Close your eyes lightly. Sit relaxed but alert. Take note of your breathing in and your breathing out and its rhythm for a minute or so. Then, either silently or aloud, begin to recite a single word or phrase. The World Community for Christian Meditation recommends the ancient Christian prayer word "Maranatha" (which means ‘come our Lord’). Say it as four equal syllables. Breathe normally and give your full attention to the word as you say it, silently, gently, faithfully, and - above all - simply.
Alternatively, you may prefer to take a verse from the psalms such as ‘The Lord is my shepherd’ or ‘be still and know that I am God’.
The essence of meditation is simplicity. Stay with the same word or phrase during the whole
meditation and in each meditation day today. Don't visualize but listen to the word, as you say it. Let go of all thoughts (even good thoughts), images, and other words. Don’t fight your distractions: let them go by saying your word or phrase faithfully, gently, and attentively and returning to it as soon as you realize you have stopped saying or it or when your attention wanders.
As you begin, try and do this for up to ten minutes, with the last part of your time simply sitting in silence and being open to the presence of God within you and around you. As the practice becomes more familiar,
try to extend your mediation time to up to twenty minutes.
A Meditation Sala or Pavilion called “The Bamboo Cathedral”
This meditation sala for our lovely now 90-year old client Khunying Noi, a member of the royal family, is situated on top of a hill in northern Chiang Mai with a unique view of the northern mountain range.
Initially, she was looking for a space to enjoy the sunset and bring together the family. So the Sunset Sala came to be and proved very popular with her friends and family. As she is a practicing Buddhist and an active member of the Buddhist community, she then commissioned us to create a space designed to facilitate spiritual practice. Consequently, the meditation cathedral was added with bathrooms and a small M&E mushroom.
The design of all buildings emulates the mountain range and the rolling hills. Thus, the buildings mold into the scenery as if they grew there by themselves. To lift the practitioner’s feelings, the meditation sala was designed like a dome of a cathedral. To achieve the cathedral feeling we used bundled bamboo to form arches that are at the same time the structural support of the whole building like in roman or gothic cathedrals. They carry a floating umbrella-shaped roof with skylights like a wheel.
Next to the meditation sala is a bathroom with showers and toilets for ladies and gentlemen. It has a striking bamboo roof on top of an adobe building with decorative bottles in the wall. Next to the bathroom is another smaller bamboo building in the form of a mushroom that hides the water tank and an even smaller one for the well.
