QGIS is the leading open source geographic information systems (GIS) software. One of the the software's strengths is its ability to work with a wide range of data formats, including various forms of satellite remotely sensed data. This 2 minute tutorial explains how to download and prepare soils data from the Web Soil Survey website using MS Access. Soils data is often used by archaeologists for predictive modeling, contextualizing site environment, and so forth. This video uses QGIS Latest Release version 3.12.

UPDATE: In more recent versions of the web soil survey, the attribute field for drainage may be called drclassdcd and/or drclasswettest.

2024 UPDATE: If you get an error message reading "The active content in this file... when you try to open the MS Access file, click OK, then Stop All Macros, then the Learn More button. Follow the instructions on that page under the "Unblock a single file" section. Then, re-open the file in MS Access, click OK again, click Stop All Macros, and then you can click Enable Content.
