The Danger of Hubris and Ego: How to PREVENT Starliner’s WORST-CASE scenario and bring these Astronauts home safely
We’re all human beings, even the brilliant people at NASA & Boeing. Maybe especially the ‘smartest’ the people in the room. If science, teamwork, and logic win the day and work all the problems our Starliner CFT Astronauts come home safely. The WORST thing that could happen is if hubris, ego, pride, or other not-so-great emotions drive the decisions for crew safety.
I would not be surprised if NASA & Boeing decide to extend the time in station to the max of what’s allowed for #boeingstarliner this test flight. What would surprise me, is if we get to the end of testing and it’s still not clear that the spacecraft can make the trip home and THEN choose to go anyway. THAT’S when I start getting worried.
Until then - we will sit back, take in the next conference update from the NASA/Boeing teams and learn more about what’s going on and what the problem is. Mission success is Crew safely back in Earth. We can always do another spacecraft flight test with crew. There’s always another spacecraft. There is only the crew. Just need to say that out loud.
There’s NOTHING wrong with another plan to send a different spaceship for the return of astronauts. I don’t think that’ll happen, but it’s an option. What’s not an option, is launching for home if you are not confident in your spacecraft. Just send it back robotically and get data.
Good luck teams. Science the $#%T out of it!
