Today's mood? Well, it's Halloween, and let's just say, the West African vibe doesn't scream "trick or treat." Lola, my fabulous West African roommate, schooled me on it. According to her, if Halloween were a thing in here, many folks would consider it negatively. Some African cultures, she explained, have a number of superstitions. Picture haunted houses and dressing up as ghosts—yeah, not exactly the holiday of choice for folks around here. I love it though. I think it is all in good fun, right?
Just to make me feel even more homesick, I went online and saw my American friends and acquaintances posting pictures of their epic Halloween parties and their outlandish costumes. I felt like I was missing out on all the fun, even though I had a video call with my family. This is my first time spending any holiday away from home, and boy, it's hitting me hard.
But you know what Lola did? She decided to be the Halloween angel (or maybe witch?) to lift my spirits. She threw an impromptu Halloween party right in our apartment, with all our classmates and neighbors joining in the fun. She even pulled off a last-minute matching costume for both of us. I can't express how grateful I am to Lola. She's been a total darling since we first met, and even though it's been a relatively short period, I feel like I've known her all my life.
During the video call with my family, my mum reminded me to stay positive and use affirmations after seeing my mood. She said, "Yaa, even though you're missing Halloween this year, remember you're in Africa for a reason. Think about the bigger picture, like seeing your name on the credits of blockbuster movies years from now as a director." Her words brought a smile to my face. So, moving forward I've decided to share weekly affirmations.
So This week's affirmation will be: "I am surrounded by a supportive community that uplifts me” because Even in unexpected places, life can surprise you with unexpected joy." Who would've thought I'd be celebrating Halloween in West Africa with new friends and Lola?
Overall I’m grateful to Lola, for being a good roommate, sister, friend and personal photographer! She took some snapshots that I based my art on for today’s entry. This entry is for you, Lola! Stay tuned for more entries my Chales!
With lots of gratitude,
Yaa
