Hello World ;)
When I got on my flight to West Africa this morning, journaling wasn’t even a whisper in my mind. Somehow, less than a day into this journey, I have a compulsion to do it. I’ve never been much for journaling, but as a film girl I think I found a way to make it fun for myself. We’ll see though.
Oh, where are my manners? I'm Yaa, your guide to all things daring and cinematic. Welcome to my online journal blog thing…! You’re probably confused, but bear with me.
I’m on an exchange trip in West Africa through my film school, and I wanted to do kind of a memoir of my time here. I wanted to make something that was very me. So, what better way than to make a journal that combines a bit of everything I love. One part film, one part my art / photography, one part my brother Kofi’s amazing AfroBops, and one part whatever random stuff comes to mind. And of course, I couldn’t make an experimental film be without you, the audience.
So, earlier this year I caught wind that my school offered an opportunity to study abroad in Africa. The revelation that my film school offered a year long exchange program was like an signal flare to my inner explorer. I had to go.
What Zillennial can resist a golden ticket to sprinkle some glitter onto their resume, right? :)
Jokes aside, it’s deeper than that for me though. As you’ve probably guessed from my name, my parents are from this region, and it’s really amazing to have the opportunity to spend time here.
Right now I’m sitting poolside, gazing out at a city that defies all expectations. It's not just beautiful; it's living, breathing proof that life has so much to offer.
So, anyway, here's to new beginnings as I dive headfirst into this uncharted territory. It’ll be awesome, I think. I'm kind of riding a wave of optimism and I know there's beauty in embracing the unknown. I just got here though, so the overwhelm is real. I’ll get used to things soon though, I know it.
As for my newfound hobby of journaling, who knows? This format is a little wonky, but honestly I kind of like how random it is. Hopefully I can stick with it, but time will be the judge of that. One thing I can for sure though is - I'm thrilled to have you along for the ride.
