Vampire on the loose?! When news broke of the discovery of a female 'vampire' skeleton, I had to sink my teeth into the story. Steel-plated neck guard. Check. Garlic lei. Check. Poland, here I come! Less than three hours from Warsaw, Archaeologists from Nicolaus Copernicus University take me to where she was unearthed…and then it gets weird. The items found in her grave continue to perplex scientists. The condition of her skull cannot be explained. All signs point to fear. Why was the community SO frightened? What made them believe this young woman was a vampire?
According to a folklore expert from the Ethnographic Museum in Torun, Poland, until the 19th century, people believed vampires were one of the most active demonic creatures. In rural communities around Eastern Europe, this was especially true. Something caused villagers in Pien, Poland to believe this woman was a witch and feared she’d transform into a vampire after death. Examining how she was buried, makes you believe they did everything in their power to prevent her blood-sucking transformation.
