For the 20th anniversary of 9/11, we're profiling people we met a year after September 11, 2001. In this special, 9/11 @ 20, we relive their stories from Ground Zero and discover how their lives were changed by this historic event.
In August, 2002 (a year after the attack on the World Trade Center), we traveled to New York City to profile people affected by this act of terror. From firefighters to ambulance drivers, to medical students to people who escaped the burning towers, we produced a number of stories for ABC News in Los Angeles.
Twenty years later, we reconnect with some of those people we originally interviewed. How did that monumental moment change the course of their lives?
On this episode, meet Dr. Dirk Stanley. On 9/11/01, he was a third year medical student working at the Brooklyn Hospital Center. From a window across the East River, he watched the towers fall. Dr. Stanley knew he had to help. While scores of people were fleeing Manhattan, Dr. Dirk and his colleagues rushed into the smoke and ash to provide medical services to anyone in need. It was a defining moment, both personally and professionally. Dr. Stanley shares memories from Ground Zero and its impact on his life.
