Youtube, it's Cram. You may have read many wacky facts about animals on the internet, some very simple, hard to believe, and others outright impossible. You may have heard that houseflies always hum in the key of F. What does this mean and how? It means that the sounds they produce always match with the 7 notes in the F major scale, which are F, G, A, B flat, C, D, and E. How do they produce this noise? Well there are 3 main ways insects as a whole produce sound. The first is a vibrating membrane, similar to drums. Insects like cicadas have membranes over a hollow cavity that they use to make sound. Another way is rubbing one body part against the other, like when crickets rub their feet together. This is similar to a violin. The third was is through the vibration of their wings, which is how houseflies produce sound. This is why houseflies always hum the key of f. Different houseflies are different sizes, but the size of their wings are related to how fast they flap their wings. The larger their wings, usually the slower they flap their wings. Sound is simply vibrations, and so this special relationship between the size of the wing, and the speed flapping is what ensures that houseflies always hum in the key of F.
