Relative Pronouns
Relative pronouns are words that introduce relative clauses, which are parts of a sentence that give more information about a noun or pronoun. They help connect ideas smoothly by linking a clause to a noun.

Common Relative Pronouns

who – used for people

whom – used for people (object of the verb or preposition)

whose – shows possession

which – used for animals or things

that – used for people, animals, or things (in defining clauses)

What Relative Pronouns Do

Identify or define a noun

The girl who won the race is my sister.

Add extra information

My car, which I bought last year, is very fuel-efficient.

Show possession

The writer whose book you read is famous.

Types of Relative Clauses

Defining (essential) – gives necessary information

The book that you gave me is interesting.

Non-defining (extra) – adds extra, non-essential information

Paris, which is the capital of France, is beautiful.
