Back in the summer of 1997, the guy 2 doors down from my parents had a motorhome. They went on vacation and the motorhome broke down somewhere in New Jersey. They rented a car, put themselves, their 2 kids, 2 dogs, and 5 birds in the car with all of their luggage, and drove home.

This particular car rental place required the car be returned to that location in New Jersey. The guy was antsy about it and wanted to return it right away to prevent further charges. So I was hired to drive his car (it was a Plymouth Acclaim, I think a 1994 model) to Jersey with his younger son. He said "follow me" and off we went. No maps, no cell phones, no maps on the phone, no GPS, nothing.

Somehow, we made it and returned the car. We got back in the Plymouth and the neighbor now drove, we stopped at the place where the motorhome was. Then we left to go back home. On the way back, we stopped at a McDonald's in Staten Island, NY. This was not a good place to stop, I've always considered Staten Island to be not such a great area. Don't remember what I ate, but it didn't sit well. He drove back home, it took hours due to construction and traffic.

When I got home, my sister was waiting for me and said "Come on, we had planned to go to Long Beach." I really didn't feel well, and after all that driving, the last thing I wanted to do was get back in the car. But we had planned it, myself, her, and xjoe81x, and we went to Long Beach. I didn't enjoy it as much as I should have because I was not feeling well. I put a damper on the situation and the trip was cut short and we went back home. I laid down in bed, my stomach was killing me!

My sister and xjoe81x decided to go Taco Bell, which is in the next town over. They went out. The skies turned dark and it rained like I've never seen before. We lost power due to the storm. And there I was in my room with a horrible stomach ache, and no power.

I got up for a short time and saw my dad, which was when we lost power, and then I laid back down. I felt very ill. Stomach was killing me, similar to the stomach virus I recently had. I think that was really my first bout with a bad stomach ache and it was awful, and there was no power.

I had a battery powered CD player and some Billy Joel CD I had borrowed from the library. I listened to it over and over. Sometime later, my mother came in to see how I was doing. She lit a candle and placed it on top of the box fan I had in my room. Not a good place for it, but there was no external source that would knock it over, so it was relatively safe where it was.

Sometime around 11PM, I got up, and felt much better. I was up for a while, and then went to bed for the night. It was a terrible day all around. I don't think I ever saw the motorhome again, perhaps the repair cost was too great, or he sold it.

Epilogue: The older son ended up moving back home with his parents and got a job somewhere, and used the Plymouth Acclaim. I don't know whatever happened to it but I have not seen it in many years.

The morbidly obese younger son, Nick, had complained of extreme back pain back around 2019 and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. While in the hospital, he had a heart attack and passed away. R.I.P. Nick, I wish I had gotten to know you better over the years.
