Today, I would like to discuss the difference between cervicogenic headaches and migraines, which many people find confusing.

Since these two conditions differ in their causes and symptoms, accurate diagnosis and treatment are crucial. In some cases, patients have taken medication for a long time believing they had migraines, only to be diagnosed with cervicogenic headaches and subsequently living happily after undergoing Prolotherapy.

Let's explore the distinguishing features and differences in treatment together.

1. What Are Cervicogenic Headaches and Migraines?

Cervicogenic headaches are headaches that originate from structural problems in the neck. They are caused by abnormalities in the neck joints, muscles, ligaments, or nerves.

On the other hand, migraines are headaches that occur due to changes in the brain's nervous system and blood vessels. They are commonly associated with genetic factors or external factors such as stress.

2. Differentiating Features: Cervicogenic Headache vs. Migraine

So, how can we differentiate between cervicogenic headaches and migraines? 1) Pain Pattern

Cervicogenic headaches are dull, persistent pain that typically starts in the neck and spreads to one side of the head.

The pain may worsen when moving the neck.

Conversely, migraines are characterized primarily by pulsating pain and occur on one or both sides of the head.

2) Triggering Factors

Cervicogenic headaches are triggered by neck movements or changes in posture.

On the other hand, migraines can be triggered by factors such as stress, light, noise, and certain foods. 3) Associated Symptoms
Cervicogenic headaches commonly involve pain and tenderness in the neck and shoulders, while migraines are characterized by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.

3. Differences in Treatment Between Cervicogenic Headaches and Migraines

Now, let's look at the differences in treatment. Since the causes of the headaches are different, the treatment methods also differ.

#Treatment of Cervicogenic Headache

1) Physical Therapy: Relieves muscle tension in the neck and improves joint alignment.

2) Chiropractic: Adjusts cervical joints to correct imbalances.

3) Nerve Block: Occipital nerve block can effectively relieve pain.

4) Prolotherapy: Injects a high-concentration glucose solution to strengthen damaged ligaments and promote tissue regeneration. Fundamental treatment is possible.

Then, why is Prolotherapy effective in treating cervicogenic headaches?

(1) Addressing the Cause of Cervicogenic Headaches

One of the main causes of cervicogenic headaches is... It is laxity and instability of the cervical ligaments.

Prolotherapy involves injecting a high-concentration glucose solution around damaged ligaments and joints to induce an inflammatory response and promote collagen production.

Through this, ligaments and joints are strengthened, and the stability of the cervical spine is restored.

(2) Non-surgical Treatment
Prolotherapy promotes the natural healing process without surgery, and because the recovery time is short, it causes minimal disruption to daily life.

(3) Pain Relief and Functional Recovery
Pain is reduced and neck movement is improved through the regeneration of tissues surrounding the cervical spine.

#Migraine Treatment

1) Medication:
Triptans or analgesics are used to relieve acute pain.
Beta-blockers, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants are used for preventive treatment.

2) Lifestyle Management:
Maintaining regular sleep patterns, managing stress, and avoiding specific foods are important.

3) Botox Treatment: There are reports that it is effective for chronic migraines. As such, treatment methods vary significantly depending on the cause of the headache.

Today, we looked at the distinguishing features and treatment differences between cervical headaches and migraines.

If your headache is accompanied by neck pain, it is highly likely to be a cervical headache.

Conversely, if you are sensitive to light and sound or experience pulsating pain, it is more likely to be a migraine.

Receiving appropriate treatment through an accurate diagnosis is the key to managing headaches.
