The Philippine Energy Plan by the Department of Energy models the optimal generation expansion for each of the major grids - Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao in multiple energy scenarios. These expansion plans determine the annual and total generation capacity required from each type of generation technology to meet demand and policy targets until 2050. The annual and total capacity mix involves varying levels of conventional (coal, natural gas, and oil-based), renewable (solar, wind, hydro, biomass, geothermal), and emerging energy technologies (battery energy storage, offshore wind, nuclear). These generation expansion plans will be integrated into the strategic transmission network expansion plan through generator sizing, siting, and network interconnection. Generator sizing involves breaking down the aggregate annual capacity per technology into typical unit sizes. These unit capacities will then be sited across the Philippine grid using heuristics based on technology-specific siting criteria aided by geographic information systems (GIS). Finally, these sited generators will be mapped out using GIS to determine the most suitable network interconnection point in the transmission system. This process results in a model of the forecast electricity network to be used for the strategic transmission network expansion planning.

As part of the National Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering Conference (NEECECON 2024), this technical session is organized by the UP Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute with the theme "National Development through Sustainable Industrialization."

NEECECON 2024 is co-located with the Advanced Science, Technology, and Innovation Convention (ASTICON) 2024, held from 18 to 19 July 2024 at the Novotel Manila Araneta City in Quezon City.

ASTICON 2024 showcased DOST-ASTI and UP EEEI's pioneering contributions to the ICT landscape while celebrating the partnerships that drive technological advancement and societal progress in the country.
