The Philippines Smart and Green Grid Project is a USAID-funded collaboration among the Department of Energy (DOE), National Transmission Corporation, and the UP Electrical and Electronics Institute. The project aims to develop a strategic transmission network expansion plan that should accommodate the projected growth of the country’s electric energy industry. The transmission plan will be a part of the upcoming Philippine Energy Plan, and it embodies the list of network expansion projects, the target installation years, and the capital investment required for the expansion. Transmission expansion plans up to 2050 are developed for the Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao grids while considering the different projections for generation expansion. The DOE identified several generation capacity expansion possibilities, each with varying integration of conventional and renewable energy resources. The formulation of the plan is based on horizon-year planning, where the states of the networks among the possible capacity expansion trajectories and generator dispatch scenarios at the horizon year are envisioned. The expansion of the grid from the present state is accomplished by backtracking from the horizon year. Since different capacity expansion plans are considered, the common transmission projects were selected to comprise the strategic network expansion plan.

As part of the National Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering Conference (NEECECON 2024), this technical session is organized by the UP Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute with the theme "National Development through Sustainable Industrialization."

NEECECON 2024 is co-located with the Advanced Science, Technology, and Innovation Convention (ASTICON) 2024, held from 18 to 19 July 2024 at the Novotel Manila Araneta City in Quezon City.

ASTICON 2024 showcased DOST-ASTI and UP EEEI's pioneering contributions to the ICT landscape while celebrating the partnerships that drive technological advancement and societal progress in the country.
