The Jaguar was the result of a British-French joint venture established in 1965 to build an advanced training fighter. The RAF initially planned to use it only for schooling purposes, but in the following years, the aircraft was also intended for assault duties. In the early 1960s, the French Air Force was looking for a new aircraft to replace the long-used T-33 and Fouga Magister trainers and the Mystere IV attack aircraft. In April 1964, work began on the new airframe, initially called the ECAT. The Br 121 Breguet project moved on to the next stage. It was then that the RAF became interested in the program, as they needed a trainer aircraft with similar characteristics. On May 17, 1965, a co-production agreement was signed between France (Breguet) and the United Kingdom (British Aerospace). The resulting joint venture was called SEPECAT. The first prototype took off on September 8, 1968.
Cooperation issues caused delays, which resulted in a delayed launch. The first units were introduced in 1972. The trainer aircraft program was changed to a fighter aircraft. The English and French versions differ in some minor elements, mainly minor elements of country-specific production equipment. A total of 573 aircraft were built. 403 for UK/France, 54 for Oman/Ecuador/Nigeria, 116 for India (70 produced under license). The Jaguar was armed with two 30mm ADEN single-barrel cannons on the underside of the hull. On four pylons under the wings, one under the fuselage, the aircraft can carry: cluster bombs (Belouga, BL.755); classic bombs (EU3, 454 kg); delayed drop bombs; runway bombs (Durandal, BAP.100); laser-guided bombs (BAP.100). ); laser-guided bombs (GBU-10A, BGL.400); air/ground rockets; Sea Eagle guided anti-ship; AS-30L anti-radar or ARMAT ALARM (air/ground); unguided air/ground rockets; AN52 nuclear bombs. In addition to self-defense, the Jaguar can be armed with AIM-9 Sidewinder or Matra R.550 Magic air-to-air missiles or jamming pods on two pylons above the wings.
The hull of the Jaguar is elongated with a large sloping tail. Inlets for two rectangular jet engines. Wings in high wing configuration. Two-wheel undercarriage assembly. Technical data (SEPECAT Jaguar A version): length: 16.83 m, wingspan: 8.68 m, height: 4.89 m, maximum speed: 1700 km/h, climbing speed: 101.6 m/s, maximum distance: 3524 km, maximum altitude 14000m.
