Social Media can Endanger but also Protect Soldiers, Ukraine Military Expert says
Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has been called the #TikTokWar. When Foreign fighters leave Ukraine, some have bridges to burn, and others want to leverage their experience for social media fame.
In this interview short retired Lieutenant Colonel Glen Grant, an international security and defence advisor who knows Ukraine, weighs in on #socialmedia in soldiers' hands. Grant, who has worked closely with Ukraine’s Parliamentary Defence Committee and mentors and advises Ukrainian officers, NGOs and defence volunteers, points out that some information is already easy to find - but fighting capacity is essential to keep off the internet.
Grant sees a value in social media; it's one of the only ways for soldiers to protect themselves, as their rights are very limited. While many foreigners came to Ukraine wanting to support the country, experienced soldiers were often frustrated with conditions in Ukraine's military. Grant thinks that resources are being wasted as retired, experienced internationals –especially #USMarines and former members of the Finnish Defence Forces #Puolustusvoimat – could be training Ukrainian soldiers, indicating either a lack of acknowledgement or a mismatch of priorities from the Ukrainian side. A situation that leads many foreigners who would have joined, or continued on in Ukraine's military, to work as volunteers in Ukraine instead.
