Sewing Room Thread Spool Trash Can Project
This project can be a trash can, foot rest and is also strong enough to be a step stool as long as the spool feet are near the edge of the base.
This project uses a plastic bucket. I took off the handle and cut off the plastic ridge and handle slots at the top using a hooked blade razor blade knife. It might be safer to use a jig saw along the edge.. Renee then painted the yellow bucket with blue spray paint (plastic compatible) so it was less visible when yard was wrapped on..
Used a jig saw to cut the top and bottom out of 3/4 inch MDF. Hole on Top piece is three inches in diameter. Then used a router with a half round bit on all the edges.
Renee spray painted MDF with an Off white color paint. I took a photo of a thread spool I liked setting the camera highest on it's highest resolution. Cropped to size of label for easier printing. Took the cropped image to Staples and had them print 12"x12" color enlarged image on paper. This was spray glued to the top MDF cover.
Took eight old wooden junk thread spools with thread still on them, or add a bit. Matched the spool heights for top (3) and bottom (5) so they were approx equal height. Renee sealed the thread portion with clear fingernail polish. Used a Dremel tool to taper one center hole of spools so the fastening screws would be recessed. Three spools to hold the lid and five for the base. The bucket was screwed to the MDF base with three short screws (so they don't go through)
We then wound the yarn around the bucket and glue gunned occasionally to secure. We made an extra layer for the bottom part of the spool to compensate for the taper of the bucket. Glue gunned top layer of yard to hold in more securely near the lid.
Most of the items we already had lying around. Just had to buy spray paint for plastic ($8 each) and pay for printing (approx $7)
