Infrared spectroscopy, essential to the study of newly-born stars, is challenging as the incoming signals are weak and submerged in noise. Additionally, the sky is 'crowded' and astronomers desire to 'selectively view' specific stars within the field of view of the telescope. These requirements bring challenges and opportunities to engineers. In this session, we present the design and development of a programmable ‘mask‘ working at cryogenic temperatures for Multi Object Spectroscopy that makes selective viewing of stars possible.
