The endemic disease refers to Japanese schistosomiasis, a mysterious disease that originated in Yamanashi Prefecture and struck the Kofu Basin from 1887 to 1896, around the 1880s.
This disease was later discovered to be a parasitic worm that uses the Japanese snail as an intermediate host. For 115 years, it terrified villagers as an unknown illness that caused liver enlargement, abdominal distension, and death.
However, thanks to the efforts of villagers and local authorities, as well as the involvement of many doctors, including Junsaku Yoshioka, the problem was resolved.
