[Slow explanation] Is the inside of a pupa mush? What is "wings of death"?
In our previous video, Insects Came from Space ( • 【ゆっくり解説】昆虫は宇宙からやってきた？虫の誕生の歴史を探ってみた ), we explained that the inside of a pupa is filled with the larva's viscous body fluids. This time, we'll take a closer look at the mechanism of metamorphosis.
Insects grow in a way that is different to humans, mammals, birds, and fish.
Insects such as butterflies and bees are generally thought to undergo "complete metamorphosis," growing through the stages of egg → larva → pupa → adult. However, some insects, such as cicadas, actually exhibit "incomplete metamorphosis," in which they retain their adult form from the larva stage.
A well-known experiment regarding the mechanism of insect metamorphosis is the one conducted by American zoologist Dr. Karol Williams, born in 1916, in which he cut a moth pupa in half.
This time, we'll explain the mechanism of metamorphosis, from pupa to adult, in addition to that famous experiment, "the flapping of wings to death."
