Put simply spot lights should have enough space between them to not over-power the area they are lighting but not be too far apart so that dark spots appear.
Under cabinet lights
When planning your spot lighting, you need to consider the corners in your kitchen. Plan your lighting from the corners and work inwards to avoid this problem.
Space the lights with even and consistent space between each fitting. As a general rule, it is good practice to have a spot light every 500mm to ensure a spread of light.
Keep spot lights even for symmetrical aesthetics.

Plinth lighting
Where possible, it is effective to place a light at the centre of each cupboard door or drawer.
Placing a light every 400-500mm is best practice if the doors are not even.
Remember to work from the corner as a starting point.

Ceiling lighting
It is imperative that a clear and even pattern is used.
You will need to take in to account the layout of your kitchen.
No ceiling light should be placed within a metre of the edge of the ceiling.
You should account for the position of the joists in the room.
