Spacing spotlights in the bathroom is a common mistake.
Spotlights should have enough space between them to not overpower the space they are lighting, but should not be too far apart that dark spots appear.
Follow our rules to get it right every time.
It's important to consider the IP ratings and IP zones of a bathroom to ensure the lighting is safe to use and correctly certified.
Bathroom plinth spotlights
Corners can look dark when lighting is not planned correctly. You should plan your lighting from the corners and work inwards to avoid this problem.
The way that plinth spotlights are planned depends on the layout and size of the bathroom.
Cupboards and drawer lights
Where plinth lights are going to be placed under a cupboard door, if possible it is recommended to set the plinth light to the centre of each cupboard door or drawer.
Otherwise, placing plinth lights every 400mm is best practice. Remember to work from the corner as a starting point.
Plinth lights under a bath
When placing plinths lights under a bath, it is recommended to place the lights every 400 -500mm with the same gap on the first and last plinth lights.
Bathroom ceiling spotlights
When using downlights in a bathroom, it is important that a clear and even pattern is used.
It is useful to consider the layout of the bathroom when planning downlights.
Follow the rule that no light should be placed within 2 foot from the edge of the ceiling. No cabinets or appliances should interfere with this lighting.
Measure 2 foot from the edge of the wall then plan 2 foot to the longitudinal and latitudinal positions from the corner light.
Please also consider the positioning of the joists and ensure the lighting is even and symmetrical.
If your bathroom is smaller, you should still measure 2 foot from the edge of the wall and then, based on the amount of lights you would like to install, work out how many lights can be dotted around evenly.
A ceiling light is usually required in a shower unit. The light should be placed inside the unit and then spaced two foot outwards from the light.
